Dry Hands and Clean Grooves

The Secret to Better Winter Golf

As we move into the wetter months, many golfers blame poor shots on the weather. While rain and damp conditions certainly make the game more challenging, one of the biggest performance killers is often something we can easily control – wet hands and dirty, water-filled club grooves.
The grooves on your golf club are designed to create friction between the clubface and the ball. This friction helps produce the spin and control needed for consistent distance and accuracy. When water, mud, or grass gets trapped in the grooves, that friction is reduced. The result can be shots that fly shorter than expected, spin less, and struggle to stop on the green.
The same principle applies to your grip. Wet hands or slippery grips reduce your ability to control the club throughout the swing. Many golfers instinctively tighten their grip when they feel the club slipping, creating tension in the arms and shoulders. This often leads to poorer contact, reduced clubhead speed, and less enjoyable golf.
Tour professionals understand the importance of keeping their equipment dry. You'll often see caddies carrying multiple towels and cleaning clubs after every shot. While most of us don't have a caddie, we can adopt some of the same habits.
Carry at least two towels in your bag – one dedicated to cleaning clubs and another for drying your hands. Wipe your clubface before every shot, paying particular attention to the grooves. Keep a spare glove handy and don't be afraid to change it if it becomes soaked. In persistent rain, rain gloves can provide excellent grip and confidence.
This winter, before you change your swing, check your equipment. Dry hands, dry grips, and clean grooves can make a remarkable difference to the quality of your shots. Sometimes the easiest improvements in golf have nothing to do with technique and everything to do with preparation.
