How to Stop Topping the Golf Ball

One of the most frustrating things is golf! If you have been told you lifted your head then think again and read on-

Topping the ball is one of the most common frustrations for golfers, and it usually comes down to losing posture, poor weight shift, or trying to lift the ball into the air. The key is to remember: the loft of the club gets the ball airborne — your job is to strike down and through.

First, check your setup. Stand tall with a slight knee flex and tilt from the hips, not the waist. Let your arms hang naturally. Many topped shots start before the swing even begins because the player is too upright or reaching for the ball.

Next, maintain your posture through the swing. When golfers top the ball, they often stand up through impact. Feel like your chest stays down and rotating over the ball while your spine angle remains stable. A simple thought is: “stay down through contact.”

Weight transfer is another major factor. If your weight stays on your back foot, the club bottoms out too early and catches the top of the ball. Focus on shifting pressure into your lead foot during the downswing. By impact, about 70% of your weight should be forward.

Avoid trying to help the ball into the air. Scooping or flicking with the hands leads to thin contact. Instead, feel the club brushing the grass after the ball. A great practice drill is placing a tee just in front of the ball and aiming to clip it after impact.

Finally, keep your tempo smooth. Rushing the downswing often causes early extension and loss of control. A calm, balanced rhythm helps you stay centred and strike the ground in the right place.

Solid contact comes from good fundamentals, not effort. Focus on posture, weight forward, and brushing the turf — and the topped shot will quickly disappear from your game.
